BC Backcountry Cabins & Alpine Huts Guide
From the historic 4-cabin network in Tetrahedron Provincial Park to high-alpine refuges in the Spearhead, Bugaboos, and Sunshine Coast Trail—understand which huts permit recreational overnight stays versus emergency-only day warming shelters.
CRITICAL: Distinguishing Overnight Cabins from Emergency Shelters
Several well-known backcountry structures in British Columbia (such as Red Heather Hut in Garibaldi, Taylor Meadows Cooking Shelter, and Frosty Mountain Day Cabin) are designated strictly for day-use warming and emergency survival only. Planning an overnight trip assuming you can sleep inside an emergency shelter violates BC Parks regulations and deprives distressed hikers of life-saving foul-weather shelter.
